“Artham’s team navigated our complex cross-border restructuring with incredible precision. They operate at the level of top-tier global firms but with the agility of a boutique.”
Bhupender Singh is the Founder and Managing Partner of Artham Law Chambers (ALC), a boutique corporate, tax and regulatory law firm headquartered in Mumbai with presence in New Delhi and Bengaluru. An alumnus of National Law University, he brings over 18 years of experience advising multinational corporations, Indian promoter groups and SMEs on taxation, customs and international trade, GST, mergers and acquisitions, inbound and outbound investment, international taxation, data privacy and commercial laws.
Bhupender's practice covers the full spectrum of India's indirect tax and trade landscape: customs valuation and classification, related-party import transactions (SVB), Goods and Services Tax (GST), foreign trade policy and DGFT matters, and international trade remedy measures including anti-dumping, anti-subsidy and safeguard investigations. He has represented Indian pharmaceutical companies before the European Court of Justice and the United States Trade Representative (USTR), and regularly appears before Indian judicial and quasi-judicial forums up to the Supreme Court of India. He has also defended multinational and Indian promoter clients before customs investigative authorities, including in white-collar matters.
Before founding Artham Law Chambers, Bhupender worked with leading Indian law firms and a Big 4 consulting firm, an experience that shapes the firm's blend of legal rigour and commercial pragmatism. He has been instrumental in making policy representations to the Government of India (Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Commerce) on customs, international trade and GST issues, and works closely with industry and trade associations on India's bilateral trade relationships, including the India–EU and India–Germany corridors.
Bhupender also leads the firm's corporate-transactional and cross-border investment work. He advises foreign investors on inbound investment into India — FDI structuring, entity setup, joint ventures and regulatory approvals — and Indian businesses on outbound investment and overseas expansion. His transactional practice covers mergers and acquisitions, including tax and regulatory structuring, due diligence and deal documentation, supported by deep international taxation experience across double taxation avoidance agreements (DTAA), permanent establishment (PE) exposure, withholding tax and cross-border structuring. He further advises clients on data privacy and protection, including compliance with India's Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act and GDPR-aligned frameworks for multinational operations. He also represents clients in domestic and international arbitration, including tax arbitration, spanning commercial, trade and tax-treaty related disputes.
His sector experience spans transport and logistics, technology-media-telecom (TMT), FMCG, pharmaceuticals, oil and gas, and chemicals. Bhupender is a regular speaker at government and industry forums and a contributing expert on leading tax platforms such as Taxsutra. He also leads ARTHAshashtraM, the firm's knowledge and policy initiative.
